Athletic Updates

Cross Country
Our Cross Country Teams competed in the Twilight Tournament in Falmouth last weekend and they performed very well.  The girls team saw Makensie Cyr place 4th out of 250 runners in the senior meet. Caroline Meizen placed 4th also out of 200 runners in the sophomore race.  There were other very strong performances from Tess Miller in the junior race and from Kylie Blake and Rebecca Rockne in the sophomore race.

On the boys side of the tournament, freshman Trevor Mungeam, Emmett Berard and Patrick Peloquin all placed close to the top of their race while sophomore Connor Grady also placed high in the sophomore race.  Alex Mezaro, Zach Eldridge and Clark Bishop also performed well.
Congratulations to all members and to Coach Doyon and Harrington.

This is a just happened update:
This morning DHS hosted the DVC Middle School and High School Cross-Country Championships.
Connor Grady placed 10th and Trevor Mungeam placed 11th in this highly competitive race.  Hopedale won the boy's championship.
The girls race was won in convincing fashion by Makenzie Cyr with Caroline Meizen places third in this race.  Strong performances by the entire girls team resulted in Douglas winning the Girls Cross-Country Championship.  More information will follow as at time or submission the races have just ended.

Update:
Douglas hosted the DVC Cross Country championship on Saturday.  The boys team finished 4th with outstanding performances by Conner Grady and Trevor Mungeam.  The girls team tied Hopedale 36-36 but won the league title as Kylie Blake, Douglas' 6th place finisher, beat out Hopedales 6th place runner by one spot to win the tiebreaker.  This was the girls second consecutive league championship.  Makenzie Cyr was the top runner as she won the race in 18:36, followed by 3rd place finisher Caroline Meizen and 12th place Tess Miller.
Both teams now prepare for the District meet on November 8th in Gardner.

UMASS Band Day
On Saturday, October 18th the High School Band travelled to Gillette Stadium to participate in the annual UMASS Band Day. Sponsored by the 400 member UMASS Minuteman Marching Band, this festival attracts bands from all over the northeast to come together and perform at halftime of a UMASS football game on the field at Gillette Stadium. This year the Douglas High School Band was one of 75 High School bands to participate. This year’s Band Day brought 3800 band members together on the field to perform selections from Disney’s “Toy Story”. The thrilling event was capped off by a wonderful post game performance by the UMASS Band. The opportunity to perform with such a large number of fellow band members is truly one of the highlights of the year.

Walk for Cancer
On Saturday the 18th, 145 students, parents and staff participated in the Cancer Walk.  The course took the participants through various sections of town and a few neighborhoods before ending back up at the high school.  The proceeds from the event will go to the American Cancer Society and its research to end this disease.  Congratulations and a heartfelt thank you go out to Mrs. Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Adamson and the junior class for this wonderful event.

Simon Wheatrcroft
Simon Wheatcroft is about to run from Boston to New York.
He intends to cover a distance of about 240 miles in nine days and once he gets to New York he's going to run a marathon.
It is about the equivalent of running from his Doncaster home to Edinburgh. And then doing a marathon.
This is an impressive accomplishment by anyone's standards, but even more so when you consider that Wheatcroft has been registered as blind since the age of 18.Wheatcroft, who suffers from the genetic condition retinitis pigmentosa. Simon's group reached out to DHS and asked if our cross country athletes would join him on a small portion of his Friday run from Hopkinton to Pascog.
Our varsity runners were so excited to have this opportunity and they did join Simon at Classic Envelope and ran back with him to DHS where they were greeted by students, faculty and administration.
It was an honor to share a small part of this incredible story and Simon left a positive mark on our school community.  We wish him the best of luck in this event, it is just an amazing feat.

National Honor Society Induction Ceremony
National Honor Society held their Induction Ceremony on  Monday October 20th. This year we inducted 14 new members to the Chapter and they will be joining the 10 existing members.
The Douglas High School National Honor Society is under the direction of Mr. Babola and he is supported by a Faculty Council of Mrs. Gaskell, Mrs. Costa, Ms. Braney, Mrs. Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Cote.

The PTO is wondering if there are any students who are looking to fulfill their Community Service requirements who may be interested in helping at an upcoming event.  They will be holding a Pancake Breakfast at the Elementary School on 11/8 and are looking for volunteers to help out.  Depending on the hours they are looking for, they could use 10 people for 2 hour shifts each (5 for 8 am - 10 am and 5 for 10 am - 12 pm) or 5 people for 4 hour shifts each (8 am - 12 pm.)  If interested please come to the Main Office.
