Graduation is fast approaching, so ask your child if they have submitted the paperwork for community service and have become current with their class dues.  These two matters must be taken care of prior to being added to the graduation line-up.
Please also review the calendar of dates at the end of this blog for the dates for upcoming Senior Exams which will start on May 28th. 

Spring Sports Awards
Spring Sports Awards will be held on Thursday May 29th at 7:00 pm in the High School Auditorium.

Athletic Updates:

The Track and Field Team competed in the District Track Meet.  

The girls put forth a strong effort, finishing in 3rd place overall out of over 20 teams.  Olivia Collins had a strong day, finishing 1st in the 200 and 3rd in the 100.  Makenzie Cyr finished 2nd in the 2 Mile and 3rd in the 400.  Taryn Cordani finished 2nd in the mile and Rachel Dixson finished 2nd in the triple jump.  Anders Lafortune, Courtney Hill, and Tess Miller also medaled along with both the 4x400 relay which placed 2nd and 4x100 relay which placed 4th.

The boys team had a performance to remember, becoming district champions for the 2nd straight season, lapping the field defeating its nearest competitor by 26 points.  Brandon Hoghaug was named Overall Meet MVP, winning gold and setting school records in both the High and Long Jump as well as leading the 4x400 team to a 2nd place, which also included Daveed Goldenberg, Justin Gualtieri, and Bryan Pineo.  Dylan Menard was another standout, winning the 100, placing 2nd in the long jump, and anchoring the 1st place 4x100 relay team which also included Ryan Gordon, Brandon Frink, and Randy Guertin.  Luke Daly and Nick Grondin each medaled twice individually.  Other medalists included Randy Guertin, Daveed Goldenberg, Braden Mungeam, and the 4x800 relay team all medaled.

The Track and Field Teams traveled to BMR and braved the elements on May 22nd to take part in the DVC Championship.

The girls made a tremendous run at perennial power Sutton,  however they eventually finished 2nd overall scoring 122 points to Sutton's 140.  The girls led the next closest finisher by 30 points.  Makenzie Cyr won gold in the 400 and took second in the 2 Mile.  Olivia Collins had a first in the 200 and a 2nd in the 100.  Courtney Hill was the javelin champion.  Other top performers included: Taryn Cordani with two 2nd place finishes, Rachel Dixson with a second place in the triple jump, and Anders LaFortune also took second in the discus.

The Boys continued their remarkable season, cruising to the DVC Title scoring 136 points to Sutton's 112.  Dylan Menard was the star of the day, capturing gold in the 100, 200, and long jump, while taking 4th in the triple jump.  Brandon Hoghaug was first in the high jump and 400, while taking 3rd in long.  Randy Guertin and Luke Daly provided valuable points each placing in 3 events.  Daveed Goldenberg had a strong day taking 2nd in the 400 hurdles and 3rd in the 800.  Nick Grondin came in 2nd in the Mile and anchored the 4x400 relay to a second place finish.

Boy's Volleyball travels to Millis for their first round District Tournament Game on Friday May 23rd. Game time is 7:00 PM and wish Coach Cicero and the team good luck as they look to extend their excellent season.

On Monday, May 19^th the high school chorus performed our countries proudest song, the National Anthem to open the Pawtucket Red Sox game at McCoy Stadium.

Special Olympics
Special Olympics was hosted by the Douglas High School on May 22nd. 
There was also performance by the DHS Band and Colorguard.
It was a wonderful event, with so many inspiring performances.

This year's Special Olympics were held in the memory of Brandon Ballou, a wonderful young person who is very much missed.

Worcester Regional Middle School

Science and Engineering Fair

On Monday, May 5, 2014, ten 8^th graders represented DHS at the 15^th annual Worcester Regional Middle School Science and Engineering Fair. 118 projects were entered into the fair, which was held at WPI.

The students who brought their projects to the fair were Jared Ayotte-Inhibiting Rust, Taylor Catlin-Engineering an Affordable Prosthesis, Hannah Clayborne-Which Apple Variety Browns the Most?, Josh Cyr-Corked vs. Un-Corked, Santina MacGregor-Faster in Hot or Cold?, Jared Marston-Appy Feet, Priya Patel-Sodium Chloride Question of the Day: Does it Affect the Glow of Luminol?, Jordan Perry-Vitamin C: Boiling vs. Steaming, Andrei Sacco-Drink Up: Vitamin Doesn't Last For Long!, and Henry Torpey-Kinetic and Potential Energy.

We are pleased to announce that Jared Marston earned 3^rd Place for his project, “Appy Feet”.  By scoring in the top 10% at Regionals, Jared is also eligible to enter the national Broadcom MASTERS science, technology, engineering and math competition. Jared will be representing DHS at the Massachusetts State Middle School Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held on Saturday, June 14, at Worcester Technical High School. In addition, due to her 1^st Place award at the Douglas Science and Engineering Fair, Taylor Catlin will also be representing DHS. 7^th grader Natalie Fenoff earned Honorable Mention at the Regional Fair and will join Jared and Taylor as they compete at the state level.

           Congratulations and good luck to all of them!

DHS Marching Band’s Baton Twirling Team

This year has been the strongest one yet for the DHS Colorguard! The Guard consists of baton twirlers, a rifle squad and the flag team. These three teams are an integral part of the Douglas Marching Band and performed with the band at the 12-15 parades each year. The groups also prepare a specialized floor show for the winter and spring concerts as well as competitions on band trips. These floor shows takes several months to write, produce, choreograph, and practice to perfection.. The teams practice two nights each week throughout the school year.

"Boston Strong" was this year's theme for the majorettes, baton twirlers, and spring show.  Their captain is Kayla Lightbown. Baton team members are Anelia Marston, Jolane Thibault, Ahlora Fierro, Katelyn Saucier, Kelsey Gray, Suzie Thibault, Emily Gannon, Morgan Mooney, Emma Lincoln, Kelly Hayes, Sarah Calkins.

This year, the Rifles and Flags combined to form the DHS Indoor Guard. An Indoor Guard is a performing colorguard unit that uses flags, rifles, sabres, and adds a theatrical element to the floor show. This year's show had a swashbuckling theme, "Dead Men Tell No Tales". Captains of the Indoor Guard are Ashley Labonne and Caitlyn Wunsch. . Members are Kylie Blake, Sydney Connor, Briel Didonato, Stephanie Gagnon, Janey LaFleur, Kelsey LaFleur,  Olivia MacInnis, Nicole Murphy Corey Parkinson, Sophie Thorson.

Boys Volleyball defeated BVT on Wednesday and with the victory they have qualified for the MIAA Tournament again.  They still have a few games remaining on their regular season schedule to improve upon their overall seeding. Congratulations go out to the members of the team and to Coach Cicero for their qualifying and for the nice season they are having.

I also want to congratulate the softball team for also qualifying for the MIAA Tournament with still four games remaining on their schedule.  They also have had a good season and are looking forward to improving their seeding by finishing well.  Congratulations to the members of the team and to Coach Furno.

Our Baseball team is also in the hunt for post-season play with a number of games left to play in order to qualify.  We'll keep everyone updated as their season winds down.

Kylie Blake has organized a presentation for the students in Grades 6-8 to be engaged with the good people at NASA through a planned skype conference.  It will take place on Monday at 8:15.  We are so proud of Kylie and her dedication to this wonderful project.  We'll have some details next week.

"The Thug & The Thugless" is a play written and directed by two seniors, Luke Daly and Mitchell Dunn, and performed by members of the DHS Drama Club. Join us for a madcap tale about lost siblings, found symbols, and science experiments gone bad.

Band and Chorus Performance

we want to extend good luck to the Grade 8 band and choral programs as they compete in the Great East Festival; on Friday May 30th. After their performances they will travel out to Six Flags for an afternoon of fun to celebrate their year of performances and hard work.

Sober Celebrations

*More than 6,500 people under the age of 21 die annually from alcohol-related accidents, and thousands more are injured.

*Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America's young people and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined.

*Each day, 7,000 kids in the United States under the age of 16 take their first drink.

*Those who begin drinking before the age of 15 are four times more likely to develop alcoholism than those who begin at age 21.

*More than 1,700 college students in the United States are killed each year - about 465 a day - as a result of alcohol -related injuries.

*25% of US children are exposed to alcohol-use disorders in their family. www.ncadd.org/indexphp/programs-a-services/alcohol-awareness-month.

*As middle and high schools enter the last few months of the school year and prepare for school dances and proms, as well as promotion and graduation ceremonies, now is an important time to discuss the dangers of teenage drinking. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) promotes Alcohol Awareness Month in April and offers information and rescourses, such as Ten Tips for Prevention (www.ncadd.org/index.php/for-youth/prevention-tips).

*Attention baseball fans!  The music department is currently selling tickets to the Pawtucket Red Sox game on May 19^th which will not only feature the Pawsox battling the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, but also the DHS Chorus singing the National Anthem to start the game.  Tickets are available through members of the high school chorus and the music department for $8 each and half the price of the ticket comes directly back to the music department.  Why not buy a ticket and support the music department and take advantage of the best value in professional sports.
