DHS's Students of the Month

Douglas High School announces Students of the Month for September 2015
Douglas High School would like to congratulate two of their seniors who have been chosen as Students of the Month for September 2015-Alexandra Corso and Michael Pepin

Alexandra Corso is a fascinating, dedicated, top student who enjoys her involvement in many rigorous courses, and various activities at Douglas High School. She is the Soprano Section Leader, and a member of the award-winning chorus since 9th grade as well as a strong contributor to the acapella chorus. Last year and this year Alex has been active in the drama club In 9th and 10th grade she served as class secretary and was a member of the math team. This year Alex and another classmate have co-founded the Robotics Club which starts in November. Alex also joined the golf team this year to expand her skill level in this sport. Last year, Alex earned recognition for receiving the University of Rochester Xerox Award for being the top computer student. In the 10th and 11th grades she earned the top Math Award in her class. This year she has been recognized as a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program, and has received the National School Development Council Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership in Learning. In addition to her academics Alex balances working a part time job at Blackstone Valley Music where she is also a violin student. This year she has formed a rock band in which she is the lead singer. Last summer, Alex was on of 50 students chosen out of 1500 applicants to attend the Samsung App Academy. She wrote an essay about creating an app about food allergies and was taught how to begin to create just that. Alex plans on attending Women in Engineering Day with a classmate at the end of October. Next year Alex will be moving on to college to major in game design and animation.

Michael Pepin is an outstanding, talented young man who has been on the honor roll each year of his high school career. He is balancing a rigorous schedule which includes three AP courses as well as being an asset for the DHS Varsity Soccer Team. During his junior year he was invited to compete on the Dual Valley Conference All-Stars team and Central Mass All-Stars team! Michael is world-traveler. This year he travelled to England with his club team to compete on the international field. His team was victorious against the international teams three times there. The dedication and skill he brings to the game has earned him the title of Captain for his senior year. Michael helped beat our long-time rival, the Sutton Sammies, by scoring the only goal at their homecoming! Then, at our homecoming Michael scored one of three goals scored to contribute towards another win against Sutton. His athleticism will be welcomed by the track team this year. Michael is an active participant on the field, as well as off the field. He gives back to the community through his philanthropic volunteer work at the local soup kitchen, and the Webster Care-Collaborative. Over the past three years he has been a common feature on the sidelines refereeing and/or coaching our local teams. Just like he gives back to the community,Mike gives back to the Tigers! Since sophomore year he has been a member of the student council, and during his junior and senior years he has taken the initiative to become the class historian. We look forward to seeing the senior slide-show he is designing for our graduating class!

DHS Chorus news:

I would like to share with you some information about a very exciting event that is just around the corner in which our very own Douglas High School Chorus and DHS  A Cappella Ensemble (Blue Light Special) will be performing at Worcester’s renowned Mechanic’s Hall.  The groups will be special guests of the Worcester Men of Song as they present their annual winter concert.

Mechanic’s Hall is widely thought to be one of the best venues in which to see and hear a performance in North America – some would even say, the world, and our students will have an opportunity to share the music they’ve prepared from its stage.  The concert will also feature performances by the Worcester Men of Song Chorus and the North East District Senior Barbershop Quartet Champions Trade Secret.

Tickets for the concert are available through various outlets but are being offered at a discount rate through the high school music department.
