It's Play Night
Aidan's King's play will be performed  tonight at 7 p.m. in the DHS Auditorium. He has written and directed "The Untitled Aidan King Project" for his senior project, and it is really quite hilarious and showcases Aidan's zany sense of humor.  It is family friendly (albeit bizarre) and proceeds will be supporting the Douglas High School Drama Club. Tickets are $5 each.

Break a leg everyone!
Please join us for a night of laughs!

Congratulations Aidan King on an exceptional Senior Project.  Much to be proud of here.

Important Reminder:
As we close out third quarter; it is important that the members of our Senior Class meet all obligations required for graduation.  Please confirm with Mrs. Fitzpatrick that you have completed all of your community service obligations as well as the payment of your class dues as soon as possible. If a student or a parent has a concern for the status of their senior relative to these obligations they can contact Mrs. Fitzpatrick or me by email.

Remember that you must complete these obligations in order to participate in all Senior Week activities. Also that these obligations are linked to graduation requirements.

On Sunday morning; real early in the morning: 56 members of the Class of 2016 will be traveling to Orlando, Florida for five days and four nights at Disney World.  These students have been looking forward to this for quite a period of time and we hope they have a great trip and that they don't forget to get and apply sunscreen.

The chaperones are: Mrs. Fitzpatrick; class advisor, Mr. Riordan, Ms. Braney, Mr. Thayer, and Mr. Elliot.

Have a great time everyone.

Stanley Koplik Awards

Fifteen seniors were awarded the Koplik Certificate of Mastery with Distinction this week at DHS.  This certificate is a non-need-based tuition waiver for Massachusetts public colleges and universities that recognizes outstanding achievement by our students in the fields of mathematics, science, arts and humanities.  Students initially qualify for the Koplik Certificate of Mastery with Distinction by scoring in the "Advanced" area of at least one Grade 10 MCAS test subject, and "Proficient" on the remaining sections of the Grade 10 MCAS.  Students must also fulfill additional requirements that include scoring a "3" or higher on two or more Advanced Placement exams, receiving a qualifying score on two or more SAT Subject Tests, or a combination of the two.

The following seniors received the award:  Matthew Blanc, Alison Carroll, Alexandra Corso, Ryan Ellis, Micalea Goldenberg, Derek Guertin, Shannon Harney, Kristina King, Margaret Landry, Matthew LaTour, Austin Lemire, Virginia Maguire, Angela Pignatiello, Kaitlyn Reber, and Heather Welch.

Great job everyone.  I also want to acknowledge Mr. DeNoncour and Ms. Burrows for all their dedication to the group and the performance.

Off to New York:

The Douglas High School Band and Chorus will be participating in a three day two night trip to Festival of Music being held at Felician University in Lodi, NJ. The dates of the trip are Friday April 29th - May 1st.
All groups will be performing at the festival before judges on Friday.  They will be competing with other high schools from the northeast at this festival.
During the trip, they will have the opportunity to attend an afternoon at Six Flags Great Adventure Park in Jackson, NJ; travel to NYC and spent time at the Top of the Rock Observatory in Rockefeller Plaza; Tour the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and then conclude their trip by touring the 911 Memorial before returning to Douglas on Sunday May1st.

This is such a wonderful opportunity for our students to be able to compete in a performance based setting while also interacting with some historically poignant sites.  We extend our best wishes to our students for their performances as well as express our gratitude to Mr. Elliot, Mr, DeNoncour, Ms. Burrows and Mr. Rheaume for their support of this experience for our students.  We certainly value their dedication to the students and the quality of the programs.
Lastly, we again express our appreciation to the DHS Music Boosters for their on-going support of our students and our programs.

Day of Silence
Sponsored by the DHS Gay-Straight Alliance

On Friday April 15, 2016, the GSA would like to include Douglas High School in the nation-wide initiative known as the Day of Silence. This event is one of the largest student-led actions in the country, and its purpose is to represent the silence faced by LGBT people and their allies every day.  The Day of Silence is a silent and peaceful protest against anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender bullying, harassment, and name calling. Anti-LGBT discrimination and name calling is not always targeted at members of that community, so the Day of Silence represents a peaceful protest of a problem that affects all students.

Typically on the Day of Silence, instead of speaking, participants will reveal a “speaking card” explaining their reasons for remaining silent throughout the day. The GSA will have a sign-up sheet at lunch next week and a list of participating students will be sent to all teachers.  There are numerous ways in which the participating students can meet their academic responsibilities without speaking, so the GSA asks for your support with this program.

Google Expeditions comes to DHS.

Please click below for a report on the recent visit by Google to DHS where they presented their latest technology; a virtual experience.  I myself went to Verona, Italy; London, England and Versailles, France during the day. I did not however see; Romeo or Juliet; William Shakespeare or King Louis XIV while visiting this locations.
A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Nichols for arranging for this opportunity for our school community as well as organizing the entire schedule that allowed faculty and students to participate throughout the day. A great experience. Click the link below for a report on the day's events.

2016 Student Wellness Conference

Seniors Tess Miller and Bradley Novack attend the 2016 Student Wellness Summit sponsored by the Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early's office. Tess and Bradley attended this conference with School Resource Officer Brett Fullone and Officer Anthony Yannino. The event took place on Tuesday April 12th at Worcester State University.

This is an annual event that is open to middle and high school students. It addresses many of the issues associated with substance abuse among adolescents.  The summit was attended by student representatives from school districts throughout Central Massachusetts and beyond.
District Attorney Early opened the event by welcoming everyone in attendance. While attending the Summit; Tess and Bradley heard from Keynote Presenter:
John Morello and “Dirt”; his one man show that addresses substance abuse and bullying among teens and explores the challenges and choices that young people face every day.

They also watched “If Only”; a short film intended for teens, parents and adults to raise awareness about the dangers of prescription drug misuse and abuse.  Directed and produced by James Wahlberg, brother of Mark Wahlberg
.
They also had opportunity to hear the personal story of Shawn Loiseau; a native of Shrewsbury, MA and a former NFL Linebacker.

Students were also provided a full lunch in the University’s Campus Dining Hall which overlooks the Lancers’ football stadium.

We want to express our appreciation to both Officer Fullone and Yannino for their support in providing this opportunity for Tess and Bradley.

Tiger Jam a Huge Success!!!

On April 2nd, DHS once again enjoyed the music of the annual Tiger Jam event.  This year there were 24 acts which included present students and alumni from DHS.  As always our students were backed up by our House Band "The Hortons".  The Horton's is comprised of Mr. Elliot on keyboards; Mr. Riordan on bass and backing vocals; Mr. LaChapelle on rhythm guitar and Mr. DeNoncour on anything and everything.  New this year to Tiger jam was the brass section that featured Mr. DeNoncour, Mr. Rheaume and Mr. Nathan Zane. Mr. Zane came to Douglas from the North Shore to support two student performances.  We thank him for taking the time to do so. It was great evening of entertainment

We extend our appreciation to Mr. Phil Smith for sharing with us these wonderful photo's from the concert.
