Science Bowl
On Saturday March 5, Douglas High School was represented at the Northeast Regional Science Bowl held at UCONN. This is the biggest high school science bowl in the region. The team consisted of Matthew LaTour, Ryan Ellis, Matthew Blanc, Katie Reber, and Kristina King. Matthew LaTour was the team captain, as he had created this team for his Senior Project. We had practiced and prepared for the tournament by watching past science bowl competitions. We played many rounds, switching from room to room with different college students running each round starting from 7 am until almost 5 pm. For lunch they provided us with FREE Subway! We then continued to compete in the Wild Card competition afterwards. DHS had by far the best sportsmanship, confidence, and fun. We made friends with the question readers and score keepers; they are current undergraduate students at UCONN. Overall it was an enjoyable day; we celebrated by finding a milkshake stand on the beautiful campus. We received cool free science bowl t-shirts too. The competition was well worth it (for the experience, making new friends, and the free stuff.) The students on the team will be graduating this year, but I hope next year other students would like to create a team and represent our high school again! Ms. Pierce

Career Fair at Nipmuc
On Tuesday, March 15, 2016 a group of eight students attended a career fair School-to-Career experience by the Workforce Central Career Center. Our students learned about different types of manufacturing jobs they could enter into after high school. they met in a small group with seven companies to learn about the types of manufacturing performed, and the job opportunities for them after graduation. These jobs ranged from packaging materials such as wood and foam through Atlas Global Solution, to the assembly of control systems through Omni Control Technology Inc. Students had the chance to ask questions and learn about the alternative paths after high school. They had the ability to explore numerous careers at Interstate Speciality Products, Lampin Corporation, Lenze Americas, and EMC Corporation as well.
Afterwards our students listened to a presentation which taught them about the importance of staying in communication with possible employers after interviews, how to write a resume and cover letter, how to dress for an interview, the importance of marketing both their soft skills and hard skills on a resume. They were given examples of cover letters and reviewed the top seven things to remember while looking for a job, and interviewing for the job. It was a wonderful event in which our students were able to broaden their career interests, and learn about companies in the Central Mass area.

Junior Job Shadow Day
The Google Expeditions program currently has over 32 amazing locations that teachers can bring into their classrooms to enhance the student learning experience. We are very excited we were able to bring a Google Expedition Tour to our school and learn how to use this technology with our students in the classroom. (Ms. Nichols)

I hope that you will click on the link below to read an article on DHS Athletics and the efforts to keep athletics part of the school experience this year. the article appears in this month's HIgh School Today magazine and it highlights the efforts of the Athletic and Band/Chorus Booster's in support of our student's. High School Today is a leading national magazine that is distributed to high schools across the United States. The author of the article contacted me directly wanting to write a story on this community effort. He had become aware of it in researching stories on high school athletics. I am so pleased that the nation is now aware of the wonderful and caring work of these two booster organizations.
The Girls Hoop Season comes to an end.
The Girls Basketball team advanced to the District Finals for the first time in thirty plus years. The went up against Tri-Valley League member Millis HS. The game took place at Fitchburg State University. The game was a competitive battle between two strong teams. Unfortunately, DHS was not able to prevail and their season came to a close. It was an exciting Winter season for the team and for Coach Quinn and Hippert. They closed out their season with a final record of 18 wins and 6 losses. Highlights of the season were many; like Peyton Young leading the DVC in scoring for the second consecutive year; Hannah Favloro being recognizes along with Peyton as First-Team League All-Stars; solid play from Meg Carroll and Shanna King at both ends of the court; the emergence of freshman Melina Schilling and the quality leadership and play of seniors Rachel Sutton and Shannon Harney. They brought a good deal of excitement to the school during the season and during their playoff run. The team has much to be proud of.

The Spring Athletic Season
Monday was the scheduled start of the spring season; however; with the inclement weather there was no school so the season began on Tuesday of this week. DHS fields teams in V + JV Baseball and Softball, Outdoor Track and Boys Volleyball during the spring season. Participation numbers are good and due to the mild winter, our outdoor teams have been able to get out of doors and onto their fields and track. We look forward to an exciting season as the final athletic season gets underway.

Junior Job Shadow Day
Douglas High School hosted their annual Junior Job Shadow Day on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Over 70 students participated in this program. Students had the opportunity to shadow a friend or family member or they could request to have the guidance office place them in a field of their choice. This year students had the opportunity to shadow with the radio station 98.9 The Pike, The Revolution, EMC, UMASS Memorial, Zeptometrix, as well as many local businesses including the Douglas Public School's Business Office, Douglas Primary, Elementary, and Middle School's ,the Douglas Police Station, Sports and Spine Physical Therapy, and the Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park. Google Expeditions is Coming!

Coming to Douglas High School, 2016
Goggle Expeditions will be visiting Douglas High School on Thursday, March 31, 2016. Google has just recently released a new low-tech technology tool called GOOGLE CARDBOARD. This simple tool lets users visit various sites using just a cardboard box for inserting your phone into it. Using just two lenses, a magnet and a downloaded app, the viewer is able to visit almost anywhere in Virtual Reality.
Google is now incorporating training for teachers into a program called Ǵoogle Expeditions. The training program for teachers and their students is now in the Massachusetts area. Teachers can apply on-line to have a trainer come to their school to show teachers how to use Google Cardboard in their classrooms to enhance the learning experience for students. Douglas High School has 12 teachers signed up to learn how to use these expeditions in their classroom. There will be two sessions running every half hour throughout the day for students to experience some amazing places.
The program has room for up to 30 students per session. Teachers will prepare a short lesson they would like the students to experience, and then will use Google Cardboard to bring students on a virtual experience tied to the lesson. Students will visit The Galapagos Island, The Ancient Aztec and Mayan Ruin, visit El Capitan and Yosemite National Park, as well as visit some art museums and the Palace of Versailles.
