Principal's Blog

With February just around the corner; here's to hoping we can continue the weather pattern that we've been in for this winter.  So I thought I'd share with you a reminder of last winter and hope this will sustain those who are missing the snow.

For those of you who are looking for some snow; I hope these images will remind you of what a winter wonderland we enjoyed last year and that maybe we could take a pass on a repeat performance this year!

Master Schedule Building for 2016-2017:

As we begin the second semester of the school year, it is important to know that we will soon be engaging all students in grades 8-11 in the course selection process for the 2016-2017 school year. Our Guidance Counselors will be meeting with students from February 23 through March 18.  During these meetings they will be making their initial course selections, while reviewing graduation requirements and academic department pathways.  Our faculty have begun entering into IPASS the course recommendations for their students. This process will be completed by February 8th.

The course recommendation and course selection process are the initial stages for building the Master Schedule at DHS for the 2016-2017 school year.  Parents will have the opportunity to use the IPASS parent portal to both review teacher recommendations and to submit their course recommendations for their student.  It is anticipated that this process will be available from February 13th through the 25th.  Please plan to review all course selections with your child during this time period.  Nothing that is entered at this point is a permanent decision, as there will be time to review and make adjustments to a student's schedule prior to the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.

Course Selection Process:

The Program of Studies is being worked on and should be complete and posted into IPASS by the end of next week.  This will allow parents and students to review the courses that are offered and to also review the recommended department pathways for sequencing of courses.  We hope to have the portal for parents and students open before our guidance department begins meeting with students to formally enter their courses for next year.  A reminder to parents and students that is very helpful if they list in order of preference; at least four electives that they would like to be considered for enrollment in.  This helps us when completing the schedule for each student to ensure we have all students fully enrolled in courses for next year.

Boys hoop:
The first half of the hoop season for the boys has been up and down.  The play league rival Sutton at home tonight (5:00 + 6:30)  as they look to get back to even on the year.  They are presently 5-6 on the season.  Coach Ryan and the team has won its last two games over BVT and Nipmuc. The team is putting a push on and we hope that they will find their way into the Clark and District Tournament, however; we will take it one game at a time.

The girls hoop team has an overall record of 9-2 for the season.  They also play league rival Sutton High School tonight at Sutton HS (5:00 - 6:30).  Coach Quinn and the team will look to avenge one of their losses this year with a victory over Sutton.

John’s 4K for Cancer Contact Information:
John Ferguson 1.508.776.2893
 jferguson1@umassd.edu

The Journey: Hello, my name is John Ferguson and I a junior marketing student at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. I graduated from Douglas High School with the class of 2013. I come from a family that has been affected by cancer on numerous occasions. My grandmother, aunts, and uncles all have been diagnosed with various types of cancer. The most effecting diagnoses came when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer during my sophomore year of high school. It was truly one of the most frightening experiences of my life. I grew up shielded away from the harsh world that cancer was, until her diagnoses. From that day on, I told myself that helping people with cancer would be a priority of mine when given the opportunity too. This is where my journey for the 4K begins. A few brothers of mine in the ΧΦ Chi Phi Fraternity, Zachary Boyer and Evan Foster, participated in the Ulman’s Cancer Fund for Young Adult’s, 4K for Cancer. This is a 4,000 Mile, 70 day Bicycle Trek across the United States from Baltimore, Maryland all the way to Portland, Oregon.  On this journey, along with other college-aged riders, we travel to be a symbol of strength for cancer patients fighting the fight of their lives. We visit communities affected by cancer and help out in any way we possibly can. In order to participate every participant MUST fundraise at least $4,500 with all proceeds going to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a positive affect on the cancer community that needs our help so badly. This is where I need your help. Fundraising is mainly completed through donations. If you wish to help out my cause, which is giving cancer patients the help they need, please donate to my personal fundraising page. Together we can make a difference; I truly cannot do this without you. No matter how small the donation is, it will help someone, somewhere fight the fight of his or her life.
