Recap of Events Over
the Week of March 24th-28th

DHS 9th grader Kylie Blake went to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland this past week. Kylie met two of the astronauts who were aboard the International Space Station last year (Luca Parmitano and Karen Nyberg). She also asked them a question that was broadcast on NASA TV and she got a great picture of the International Space Station autographed.

MCAS
This past week we finished up grade 8 ELA MCAS testing. The next round of MCAS testing will start May 6th with grade 8 Math and then again on May 15th-16th in Science. Grade 10 will test on May 13th-14th in Math.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick/Miss Harris
Mrs. Fitzpatrick will be out on medical leave for the duration of the school.  Ms. Melissa Harris will serve as a long-term substitute and cover Mrs. Fitzpatrick's classes while she is out on this medical leave.  Ms. Harris served in a similar capacity from September through December.  We have also appointed Mrs. Julie Oswik to serve as an instructional aide for the remainder of the year covering the classes that Ms. Harris is assigned to.

Shauna Harrington
DHS would like to welcome Shauna Harrington who will be filling in for Mrs. Krista Petrelli in the English Department while she is out on maternity leave. Ms. Harrington did her student teaching at North Providence HS last year and had been working in Winchester prior to joining us at DHS. She has hit the ground running and we are pleased to have Ms. Harrington working with our students.

Adam Morton

We have hired Mr. Adam Morton to our custodial crew at DHS.  Mr. Morton started on Monday. We're happy to have him on board and wish Mr. Pope the best as he moves to the grounds department for the Douglas school's.

Blood Drive
There was a Blood Drive held on Monday March 24th sponsored by the American Red Cross here at the Douglas High School. The Red Cross was pleased with the participation and congratulations go out to Nurse Valliere and Senior Caitlyn Wunsch. The blood drive was Caitlyn's senior project and it was a wonderful  service project on her part.  DHS is very proud of her.

Master Schedule
Next week we will begin the process of developing the 2014-2015 Master Schedule. As a result of the course selection process that recently took place  with our students meeting with their guidance counselors during the month of March we are able to begin the work of building the Master Schedule. Parent's are again reminded to use their iPARENT access in IPASS to review the initial course's that your student has selected.  Please contact the guidance office to speak with their counselor to make changes to these courses.  It will take most of April to build this schedule but you can check the progress in iPARENT once it is released.

Blackstone Valley Education Foundation
On Thursday March 27th, members of the Douglas High School Administration and Guidance Department attended the BVEF Business and Education Forum.

The BVEF supports and enhances efforts to connect current learning with future career paths for students, whether following post-secondary education or directly after high school graduation. They also provide professional development for teachers and school counselors.

National Autism Day
The seventh annual World Autism Awareness Day is April 2, 2014. Every year, autism organizations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events. Everyone at DHS is encouraged to wear Blue on Wednesday to show their support for this day of recognition.

Please follow this link if you would like to know more about World Autism Awareness Day:

Band/Chorus and Auxiliary Teams

We extend congratulations to our Band and Auxiliary Teams for their outstanding performances earlier in the month as they Marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Boston, Worcester and Woonsocket.  Their performances earned them high marks and recognition while making the school and town proud of their performances.  The Band/Chorus and Auxiliary Teams will be traveling to Washington D.C. to participate in the Fiesta-val music festival.  We will have six groups competing including the Marching Band, Concert Band, Chorus, Marching Percussion, Majorettes, Flags and Rifle teams.  They will visit the National Zoo, Arlington Cemetery and the Smithsonian Museum.  We hope they have a great experience and wish them good luck in their performances.

A Minnesota Twin
We would like to congratulate Chris Colabello on breaking Spring Training on the Major League Roster for the Minnesota Twins.  Chris is the son of Mr. Lou Colabello, PE/Health teacher at DHS.  What a wonderful accomplishment and I would like to point out that Chris is a former student of mine at Milford High School and he played baseball for me for one year and I guess that's all I needed with him!!!!

March 21, 2014 DHS Principal's Blog

During the school week we conducted the Grade ELA MCAS Exams for grade 10 students.
Our Senior Class met and have put together information for the Senior Week activities including Graduation. Cap's and Gown's are here and graduation is right around the corner.
Mrs. Petrelli had her baby, a son, and all are doing fine.
The Spring athletic season has begun with baseball, softball and track teams being finalized.  There is hope that sooner rather than later the teams will be able to get outside.  All we need is for the snow to melt and the weather to cooperate.

Next week we have the Grade 8 ELA MCAS test's taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
We have a Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday in the gym from 1-6 PM. The public is invited to participate after 2:00 PM.
School Council will meet on Thursday afternoon at 3:15 in the Principal's conference room.
Tiger Jam is taking place on Saturday night March 22nd at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. All proceeds will go to the Scholarship Fund of the Band/Chorus programs.
Student Advisory will meet on Wednesday at 7:20.
All students need to finalize their course selections in IPASS as we will begin the process of building the 2014-2015 Master Schedule during the first week in April.
