Student Presentation
On May 19th, the students of DHS were engaged with a presentation on the Opioid Epidemic that is gripping the region, state and nation.  The presentation had five components to it.  It began with School Resource Officer Brett Fullone speaking to the status of opioids in the community and region.  He supported his portion of the presentation by transitioning to a poignant and moving video create and sponsored through the state of Colorado.  Following the video a local probation officer spoke to the students about family struggles within her own family which led her to become a probation officer focused on drug and alcohol abuse and addiction.  She spoke to the day to day experiences she is confronted by specifically around opioid abuse.  The students then were engaged with a young lady and her story of become an abuser of opioids, the spiraling of her life, her instances where she was near death or dead only to be brought back by medical interventions.  She spoke to how she has turned her life around, the love of her family and her commitment to sobriety.  Her presentation was very moving and made an impact on our students.  I was able to conclude the presentation and spoke to our concern for all of our students and about the importance of decision making as they become young adults.  It was an important, impacting and poignant presentation and if you have not spoken with your child about it as of yet, then please do.

The 2016 DHS prom was a tremendous success.  It was an absolutely wonderful night for our students and as is always the case they were just fantastic.  So much for the school to be proud of.  We extend sincere appreciation to the Junior Class, their advisor Mr. Riordan and his top flight assistant, Mrs. Cote.  Everything went so well.

A highlight of the evening was the awesome Dance Off between Mr. Riordan and Ryan Ellis.

Who knew!

DHS Evening of the Arts

The 2016 Evening of the Arts took place on Wednesday May 18th and what a great night it was.  So much student talent on exhibit and in performance. The foyer was setup as an art gallery with student work exhibited throughout the foyer.  The DHS Blue Light Special performing on the Grand Staircase and Drama Students engaged in posed art exhibits.  The night was well attended and well received.  We thank Mrs. Stand, Mr. DeNoncour, Mrs. petrelli, Mrs. Delphos and Mrs. Murphy for all their efforts in presenting this event.  We all want to express our amazement and gratitude to our students who performed and/or had work exhibited during the evening.

So I tried to provide a walking tour of the exhibit.  I'm not real good with this aspect, but I think if you copy and paste the web links into the address box of your browser it should take you to these clips of the art show.  Well at least i hope it will.

Spring Athletic Awards and Senior Awards
6:30 pm DHS Auditorium

The Administration, coaches and student-athletes extend their gratitude to the Douglas Athletic Boosters for their support of this award night for our spring sports and athletes.  We also extend our gratitude to the Boosters for the wonderful recognition given to our seniors for their participation in the athletic programs at DHS.  The students received a beautiful plaque that detailed the students participation as well as providing a "D" letter for each student as well. We are so very indebted to the Athletic Boosters for all that they have provided the students and the school community with this year.  We are so blessed and fortunate to have so many concerned and supportive people focused on the quality of the school experience our students enjoy at Douglas.

Quarter 4 Senior Grades Closed Thursday May 26th.
A final reminder that there are still a few students who have not provided the school with documentation of community service which is a graduation requirement and must be completed by Tuesday morning in order for the student to participate in the Senior Week activities including graduation.  Also, a few students still owe class dues.  This must also be completed by Tuesday morning. Please check with your child to ensure that they have completed these obligations.  Any questions contact the main office.

The Peer Leaders conducted a seat belt check on Wednesday morning May 18th with the help of Officer Fulone as part of the national "Click It or Ticket" campaign.  The results showed that 87% of adults and 88% of students were wearing their seatbelts. Adults and students should be reminded that safety belts reduce the risk of death or serious injury in a motor vehicle crash by up to 50%.
